ALICIA MCCLUNG IN HER OWN WORDS

"Without their love, I would be lost. The love I speak of is that of my grandparents, who adopted my sister and me when I was eight years old. My entire life they have done nothing but love and support me and continue to do so. I would like to thank them both and my sister, who never ceases to always be there for me. I also want to thank my AP Biology teacher, Mrs. Lynda Maczynski. Even though I have had countless teachers impact me over the years, Mrs. Maczynski has been the one to dedicate the most time to my growth as a student and as a person. For this, I am ever thankful.

Leadership is about influencing the direction that a group of people will take; however, a good leader knows what direction is best. Through mentorship, I have been able to guide students who are just entering high school toward a path of fulfilling all of the potential they possess. Teaching young minds about goal setting, how to use resources and to seek opportunities has allowed their eyes to open to a world that they can see themselves succeeding in. I cannot fully express how much satisfaction can come from knowing that you are helping someone grow as an individual.

My many years of volunteer work have taught me much about the community I live within. At my local elementary school, I have learned that many of the children come from broken homes, and are being raised by parents who are very young. I have witnessed their need for someone who can nurture them and can give them positive strokes of encouragement. They need someone to look up to, because unfortunately, many of them cannot find someone like that at home. At the Seagoville Senior Center and Seagomanor Nursing Home, I have learned that much of the elder community just desires someone to talk to, someone to show that they care. They want to be involved with the young people of our community. It brightens up their day to know that we take time out of our day to spend time with them. My volunteer experiences within these different realms of my community have inspired me to continue to align all my goals in life with the contribution to the well-being of others, no matter their age. I hope to be the support and care of any person in need."
